In Burton, California, a crowd of people have been wandering the town as if sleepwalking, repeating a single mantra: “ I am an X-Man.” Norman Osborn wants his X-Men team to investigate before another incident has the opportunity to hurt his “X-Men brand.”
The team – now consisting of Dark Beast, Mimic, Weapon Omega, and leader Mystique - heads to Burton, with Mystique posing as Jean Grey to “really annoy several people who've made me suffer for their cause.” They visit one of the former “I am an X-Man” sleepwalkers, a normal human teen under observation in a local hospital.
Suddenly, the boy seems to manifest mutant powers of prescience and energy projection. The powers send Mimic and Omega spinning out of control – Mimic glimpsing his future, and Omega feeding off of the powers as he careens through town, exploding.
Dark Beast drugs Mimic so he can focus on corralling Omega while he and Mystique stay behind at the hospital. The energy crackling around their patient begins to form into a shape and a voice. As it resolves to a humanoid shape, it sees Mystique in Jean's form and says, “mother, it's been so long...”
Dark Beast catches on just before the energy resolves to a human body – it is Nathan Grey, the Age of Apocalypse version of Cable, back in human form!
